OWNER GUIDE

In Honor Of Veterans Day

In the United States, Nov. 11 is celebrated annually as a day to honor all veterans of the United States Armed Forces. This date goes back more than 100 years, to the Armistice that formally ended hostilities in World War I, which was signed on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. Originally known as Armistice Day, Nov. 11 was celebrated informally from 1919 on, and was declared a federal holiday in 1938, as a day to honor those who served in World War I. In 1954 Armistice Day was renamed Veterans Day, to expand those honored to all veterans, not just World War I vets.

Since 1954, Nov. 11 has been celebrated as Veterans Day — a federal holiday, a bank holiday, and in many cases, also a state holiday. This means that all non-essential federal government offices are closed, from schools to post offices, as are banks and state offices where applicable. The Department of Veterans Affairs refers to Veterans Day as “a celebration to honor America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.” Several of our nation’s allies celebrate veterans on Nov. 11 also, but the holiday is called Remembrance Day in Canada, Australia, and Great Britain.

How To Honor A Veteran

Honoring our veterans is important — their sacrifice is what protects our nation’s freedom, which includes our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness (which in your case often means pursuing a great vacation). So how can you honor a veteran this Veterans Day? For starters, you can thank them for their service, which is easy enough to do. If you’d like to take it to the next level, though, you may want to consider gifting your unused points through the Charitable Gift Program.

With Charitable Gift you can donate your points to Vacations for Vets, a program run by In Honor of Our Troops (IHOOT) Foundation Inc. IHOOT is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose focus is helping veterans reconnect with their families after a lengthy overseas deployment. If you have unused points to gift, IHOOT will pass them along to a veteran and their family, to be used to take an amazing vacation to relax and reconnect with their family after a long separation.

How To Gift Your Points

To gift your unused points to a veteran and their family, simply visit the Deposits and RCI page from your online Owner Dashboard, or call the Vacation Planning Center for assistance. Here are a couple of important guidelines to keep in mind when gifting points to Vacations for Vets:

  • Your points must have at least three months of remaining usage at the time of gifting.
  • There is no minimum amount required.
  • PIC points and points deposited with RCI are not eligible for gifting.
  • Once your points have been gifted, it is considered a final transaction.
  • No reservation transaction is required to gift points.
