Bring The Fun Indoors In Williamsburg

In a town brimming with authenticity and charm, Williamsburg, Virginia, remains one of the rare places in the United States that has managed to preserve history while subtly adding a touch of modernism. Brick neoclassic architecture, picturesque gardens, and a great local food scene make it a one-of-a-kind tourist destination.

And, while there is nothing like tracing the steps of our Founding Fathers if you’re looking to beat the heat or escape a rainy day, we’ve got you covered. Here are five ways to bring the fun indoors when visiting Colonial Williamsburg.

Williamsburg Antique Mall

You may not think of shopping as a historic trip into the past, that is until you’ve visited the Williamsburg Antique Mall. But, if you're visiting this storied city, it only makes sense to immerse yourself in enchanting antiques and vintage bric-a-brac. The Williamsburg Antique Mall is ideal for cooling off and exploring rare finds.

The 45,000-square-foot mall is home to over 300 vendors. You'll find everything from collectible jewelry, clocks, toys, trains, records, tools, and much more. After your treasure hunt is complete, stop into the quaint little cafe, Veranda Eats & Sweets, for a tasty treat.

Colonial Escape Room

Gather the troops and get ready for a live-action game that will have you racing against the clock to gather clues, solve puzzles, and complete tasks at Colonial Escape Room. Can you steal from the menacing Blackbeard before he returns?

Do you dare enter the hallowed home of the Chesapeake Bay Butcher? Are you skilled enough to maneuver through a futuristic hacker's basement lair to stop a deadly, world-ending cyber-virus? Escape for a little indoor action and find out.

American Revolution Museum

Journey through time and watch the story of our nation’s history unfold before your eyes at the American Revolution Museum. From the colonial period through the Constitution and beyond, galleries, films, and interactive exhibits give visitors a first-hand look into the 17th and 18th centuries. Visit a re-created Continental Army encampment and vividly experience the life of a soldier.

Explore the home of an 18th-century farming family where roosters and hens wander as historical interpreters cook over an open hearth. You'll even get to help with chores in the house, tobacco barn, and garden. And don’t head out without taking advantage of the free Talking History Lecture Series.

Chowning's Tavern

Grab a pint and gather around this laid-back tavern for casual pub fares and friendly festivities. Chowning’s Tavern serves authentic alehouse classics like Brunswick Stew and a Colonial Williamsburg favorite Welsch Rarebit.

Stay a spell, as the evenings are known for Gambols, late-night entertainment that includes balladeers, colonial games, and other 18th-century diversions.

King's Arm Tavern

From the colonial architecture down to the period-style dress of the servers and pewter candlesticks that adorn the tables, King's Arms Tavern instantly transports guests on an epicurean adventure to the year 1772. The elegant chop house infuses a modern spin on 18th-century fares such as a Hunter's Game Pye and gridiron beef tenderloin. Creative libations and mouth-watering desserts round out the experience.

That wraps up your indoor fun in Colonial Williamsburg. With an action-packed day and full bellies, it's time to retreat to your cozy suite at Club Wyndham Kingsgate, Club Wyndham Patriots' Place, or Club Wyndham Governor's Green.
